A Patriot by Steven Van Zandt I am a patriot and I love my country
Because my country is all I know I found this in 9/11/2001 |

Why should the devil have all the pretty tunes?
---Charles Wesley |
Do all the good you can, by all the means you can,
in all the ways you can, in all the places you can,
at all the times you can, to all the people you can,
as long as you ever can.
---John Wesley |
Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart,
though we are not of one opinion? Without all doubt, we may. Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding these smaller differences.
---John Wesley |
Those who give up liberty for
the sake of security deserve neither liberty nor
security.
---Ben
Franklin |
The Constitution was meant to be a Living Document — that was the Founder’s original intent. Otherwise, there would be no way to Amend it.
---The Founders on a Living Constitution |
I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.
---Thomas Jefferson in letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816 |
..... America, with the same
voice which spoke herself into existence as a nation, proclaimed to
mankind the inextinguishable rights of human nature, and the only
lawful foundations of government. ..... Wherever the standard of
freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will
her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be. But she goes not
abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.
.....
---John Quincy Adams on July 4, 1821 |
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
---Reverend Theodore Parker - “Ten Sermons of Religion” - 1835 |
That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages,
and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere.
Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place!
And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me!
And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well!
And ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief,
none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?
Den dat little man in black dar, he say women can't have as much rights as men,
'cause Christ wan't a woman! Whar did your Christ come from? Whar did your Christ come from?
From God and a woman! Man had nothin' to do wid Him.
---Sojourner
Truth - Women's Convention, Akron Ohio, 1851 |
Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid.
As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it,
"all men are created equal except Negroes." When the Know-nothings get control, it will read,
"all men are created equal except Negroes and foreigners and Catholics."
When it comes to this, I shall prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty--to Russia,
for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.
---Abraham Lincoln, letter to Joshua F. Speed, Aug. 24, 1855
|
I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and cause me to tremble for safety of my country;
corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in High Places will follow,
and the Money Power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the People,
until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the Republic destroyed.
---Abraham Lincoln, letter to Col. William F. Elkins, Nov. 21, 1864
|
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it.
---Mark Twain |
Conservation means development
as much as it does protection. I recognize the right and duty of
this generation to develop and use the natural resources of our
land; but I do not recognize the right to waste them, or to rob, by
wasteful use, the generations that come after
us.
---Theodore
Roosevelt |
To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that
we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only
unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American
public.
---Theodore
Roosevelt |
Any fool can destroy trees. They
cannot run away,
---John
Muir |
Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.
They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that,
unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts,
that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves.
Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we
are. They are different.
---F. Scott Fitzgerald |
You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.
---Jeannette Rankin, first woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1916 |
The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes.
The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected.
---G. K. Chesterton - Illustrated London News (1924) |
I’m not a member of any organized political party—I’m a Democrat
---Will Rogers |
The money was all appropriated for the top in the hopes that it would trickle down to the needy.
Mr. Hoover ... didn’t know that money trickled up.
Give it to the people at the bottom and the people at the top will have it before night, anyhow.
But it will at least have passed through the poor fellows hands.
---Will Rogers - St. Petersburg Times November 27, 1932 |
Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.
---Winston Churchill - Harrow School October 29, 1941 |
The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much;
it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.
---Franklin Delanor Roosevelt |
If you board the wrong train, it's no use running along the corridor in the other direction,
---Dietrich Bonhoeffer |
I never stopped to think of it before, but you know–a police–man will jest stand there an let a banker rob a farmer, or a finance man rob a working man.
But if a farmer robs a banker–you wood have a hole dern army of cops out a shooting at him. Robbery is a chapter in etiquette.
You mite say that Wall Street is the Street that keeps you off Easy Street. I ain’t a communist necessarily, but I been in the red all my life.
---Woody Guthrie |
You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?
---Joseph Nye Welch - June 9, 1954 |
I have sung for Americans of every political persuasion, and I am proud that I never refuse to sing to an audience, no matter what religion or color of their skin,
or situation in life. I have sung in hobo jungles, and I have sung for the Rockefeller's, and I am proud that I have never refused to sing for anybody.
---Pete Seeger - August 18, 1955 |
Because my father was a slave, and my people died to build this country and I am going to stay here and have a part of it just like you.
---Paul Robeson - June 12, 1956 |
A life is not important, except in the impact it has on others' lives.
---Jackie Robinson |
Not everything that can be counted
counts, and not everything that counts can be
counted.
---Albert
Einstein |
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.
---Albert
Einstein |
Today in America, unions have a secure place in our industrial life.
Only a handful of reactionaries harbor the ugly thought of breaking unions and depriving working men and women of the right to join the union of their choice.
I have no use for those -- regardless of their political party -- who hold some vain and foolish dream of spinning the clock back to days when organized labor was huddled, almost as a hapless mass.
Only a fool would try to deprive working men and women of the right to join the union of their choice.
---Dwight
D. Eisenhower - September 17, 1952 |
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed,
those who are cold and are not clothed.
---Dwight
D. Eisenhower - April 16, 1953 |
we yet realize that America's
leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched
material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use
our power in the interests of world peace and human
betterment.
---Dwight
D. Eisenhower - January 17, 1961

When the politicians complain that TV turns the proceedings into a circus, it should be made clear that the circus was already there,
and that TV has merely demonstrated that not all the performers are well trained.
---Edward R. Murrow |
It is immigrants who brought to this land the skills of their hands and brains to make it a beacon of opportunity and hope for all men,
---Herbert H. Lehman |
Yes, one person can change the world.
---Rosa Parks |
If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow.
I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years.
---Muhammad Ali |
The history of America is the history of the Negro in America. And it's not a pretty picture.
---James Baldwin |
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
---Rev. Martin
Luther King, Jr - April 16, 1963 |
A nation that continues year after
year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of
social uplift is approaching spiritual death.
---Rev. Martin
Luther King, Jr - April 4, 1967 |
Freedom is never really won. You earn it and win it in every generation.
---Coretta Scott King |
Our American values are not luxuries but necessities—not the salt in our bread, but the bread itself.
Our common vision of a free and just society is our greatest source of cohesion at home and strength abroad—greater than the bounty of our material blessings.
---Jimmy Carter - January 14, 1981 |
We have succeeded for 205 years in keeping the affairs of state separate from the uncompromising
idealism of religious groups and we mustn't stop now.
To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers
built this democratic republic.
---Barry Goldwater - Sep. 15, 1981 |
Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people,
Sharing all the world

---Jim Henson |
Sitting in church doesn't make you a Christian just as sitting in a garage doesn't make you a Chevrolet.
Raw ego and proud illiteracy have won out, and a severely learning-disabled man with a real character problem will be president.
Alas for the Trump voters, the disasters he will bring on this country will fall more heavily on them than anyone else.
The uneducated white males who elected him are the vulnerable ones, and they will not like what happens next.
He will never be my president because he doesn't read books, can't write more than a sentence or two at a time, has no strong loyalties beyond himself,
is more insular than any New Yorker I ever knew, and because I don't see anything admirable or honorable about him.
This sets him apart from other politicians. The disaffected white blue-collar workers elected a Fifth Avenue tycoon to rescue them from the elitists
-- fine, I get that -- but they could've chosen a better tycoon. One who served in the military or attends church or reads history,
loves opera, sails a boat -- something -- anything -- raises llamas, plays the oboe, runs a 5K race now and then, has close friends from childhood.
I look at him and there's nothing there.
---Garrison Keillor |
Look at it this way: think of how stupid the average person is,
and then realize half of 'em are stupider than that.
---George Carlin |
Government is the enemy until you need a friend.
---Bill Cohen, Republican Senator of Maine and Secretary of Defense - 1996 |
Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work, and then they get elected and prove it.

Apology
from Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks As a concerned
American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark
was disrespectful. I now realize that whoever holds that office
should be treated with the utmost respect. |

perjury and obstruction of justice are not high crimes and misdemeanors"
---Mitch McConnell - February 12, 1998 |
"I'm still the majority leader of the Senate, think of me as the 'Grim Reaper.'
None of that stuff is going to pass – none of it."
---Mitch McConnell - April 22, 2019 |
“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy.
If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts.
But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation,
we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

---Nelson Mandela |
"And remember, the difference between a mosquito and a hedge fund manager, is a mosquito will stop sucking blood before it explodes."
---Bill Maher |
"The middle class and working poor are told that what's happening to them is the consequence of Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand."
This is a lie. What's happening to them is the direct consequence of corporate activism, intellectual propaganda,
the rise of a religious orthodoxy that in its hunger for government subsidies has made an idol of power,
and a string of political decisions favoring the powerful and the privileged who bought the political system right out from under us."
---Bill Moyers June 4, 2004 |
"I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense,
but I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home."
---Ronald Reagan February 6 1989 |
"Social Security has nothing to do with balancing the budget or erasing or lowering the deficit."
---Ronald Reagan October 7, 1984 |
"tax loopholes that have allowed some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share.
... made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary, and that's crazy. It's time we stopped it"
---Ronald Reagan June 6, 1985 at Northside High School in Atlanta, Georgia |
"The rich are always going to say that, you know,
just give us more money and we'll go out and spend more and then it will all trickle down to the rest of you.
But that has not worked the last 10 years, and I hope the American public is catching on."
---Warren Buffett - November 21, 2010 |
"If anything, taxes for the lower and middle class and maybe even the upper middle class should even probably be cut further.
But I think that people at the high end - people like myself - should be paying a lot more in taxes.
We have it better than we've ever had it."
---Warren Buffett - November 28, 2010 |
"I hope we can solve that deficit problem with a sense of shared sacrifice -- where everybody would feel like they're doing their part,
And right now, I don't feel like people like myself are paying as much as we should."
---Bill Gates - January 25, 2012 interview with the BBC. |
"I am sick of multimillionaires paying a lower tax rate than a teacher or a nurse. That is wrong.."
---Hillary Clinton - September 19, 2015 |
"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples."
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
---Mother Teresa |
"And when a Christian becomes a disciple of the ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus".
---Pope Francis - October 17, 2013. |
"And if you don’t want your tax dollars to help the poor, to help the sick, to avoid violence,
to take better care of those in prison, to help the needy, fine. Don’t vote that way.
But don’t ever say you want a government based on Christian values, because you don’t."

"When people of all levels of ability are joyfully welcomed into our congregations and become full participants in the life of the church,
the Realm of God will be among us and within us!
Four friends brought their friend to Christ, tearing a hole in a roof they wanted so badly for his life to be changed!
What would you do to change a friend's life?"
---Reverend Sharon Gollery McCart - "Finding a Way" 11/11/2012 |
"The Republican Party has been extraordinarily successful at getting many groups of people to vote
against their self-interest.
Evangelicals are voting for Donald Trump. What part of Donald Trump reminds you of Jesus Christ?
Trump lusts after his own daughter on national radio, talks about women's bodies and breasts in such a disparaging way, and mocks them.
How is this in any way Christian? When you make the "other" the enemy, how is that Christian?"
---Ken Burns - JULY 5, 2016 |

“If you want to preserve, I’m very serious now, if you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press.
And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time.
That’s how dictators get started.”
---Senator John McCain - February 19, 2017 |
“I have made a different choice now. I have left my home, my family and my job, and I am raising my voice.
To do otherwise would betray those who languish in prison. I can speak when so many cannot.
I want you to know that Saudi Arabia has not always been as it is now. We Saudis deserve better.”

"All should appreciate the FBI speaking up.
I wish more of our leaders would.
